These studios are shared spaces for making, thinking, and working as a community of artists. They depend on mutual respect, care, and shared responsibility. Access is a privilege that supports this community, and it comes with clear expectations for safety, respect, and stewardship of the space.

All university policies regarding building use and conduct apply.

Access and Shared Responsibility

  • Students are granted 24-hour access for academic work only.
  • Tjaden Hall and Sibley Hall are not residence halls; sleeping or non-academic use is not permitted.
  • Keep studio doors closed and locked. Do not prop doors open.
  • Do not store valuables. The department is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Studio keys may not be duplicated and must be returned at checkout.

Care of the Studio Environment

  • Studios must be maintained in a condition that supports shared use and safety.
  • Do not modify or paint walls, windows, ventilation, or fire safety systems.
  • Keep all materials within your assigned studio space. No hallway storage.
  • Studios are documented at check-in and must be returned in original condition at checkout.

Materials and Equipment

  • Students are responsible for supplying their own materials and hand tools.
  • Tools and materials from shops and labs must remain in those spaces.
  • Access to shops and labs requires completion of safety orientation each semester.

Health and Safety

  • All students are required to follow the Art Health and Safety Guidelines.
  • These guidelines exist to protect you, your peers, and the shared studio environment.
  • Failure to follow safety requirements may result in loss of studio access.

Community Standards

  • Be mindful of noise and shared space use.
  • No smoking, alcohol, or non-service animals in the building.
  • No construction or installation that alters building structure or safety systems.

Checkout and Stewardship

  • Studios must be vacated, cleaned, and keys returned by:
  • 1st and 2nd year students: 5:00 PM July 26th
  • Thesis students: 5:00 PM August 2nd
  • Materials left behind will be discarded; storage is not available.
  • When expectations are not met, the following fees may be applied to the student bursar account:
  • Failure to clean/vacate studio: $60
  • Vandalism of furniture/equipment: $100
  • Unauthorized spray paint use: $50
  • Unreturned key: $25
